meat me in the middle

a local campaign to reduce meat consumption for environmental benefits

Welcome!

All of us have the power to fight climate change every time we sit down for a meal. Raising animals for food accounts for an estimated 12-20 percent of all the greenhouse gas emissions that are warming our planet, and causing extreme weather events and disruptive changes to ecosystems.

Simply eating less meat helps to solve the problem of climate change. Meat Me In The Middle gives individuals the inspiration and opportunity to make planet-friendly food choices. We embrace compromise and moderation. We understand the reasons that people choose meat, and sometimes we choose meat too. But our vision is for people to recognize animal agriculture’s contribution to climate change, and factor environmental costs into their food choices.

Meat Me In The Middle team members live in South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey (collectively known as SOMA).

SOMA residents have been feeling the impact of climate change directly. For example, climate-change-fueled Hurricane Ida killed 30 New Jerseyans in 2021, including a Maplewood resident. New Jersey has experienced weather/climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion ever more frequently since 1980, according to NOAA.

Climate change is a global phenomenon, so Meat Me In The Middle’s community-centered focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in one New Jersey community will benefit the environment and people everywhere.
